The Dubai Frame is a monumental landmark in Zabeel Park, Dubai, renowned for its striking design that literally frames the city’s contrasting past, present, and future. Shaped like a giant picture frame, it offers visitors a unique perspective, with views of old Dubai on one side and the modern skyline on the other.

Architecture and Design

The Dubai Frame’s design is both an architectural marvel and a symbolic gesture.

Concept and Inspiration: The initial concept was conceived by Mexican architect Fernando Donis, who won an international competition in 2009. His idea was not to build another solid emblem for the city but to create a “void” that would frame all of Dubai’s existing landmarks . The structure is designed based on the “golden rectangle,” using the mathematical ratio of 1:1.618, which is often associated with aesthetic beauty and balance.

Structure and Materials: The frame consists of two 150-meter-high towers connected by a 93-meter-long bridge at the top . Its construction required over 2,000 tonnes of steel and nearly 15,000 meters of gold cladding, giving it a distinctive and luxurious appearance . The facade also incorporates designs from the Expo 2020 logo.

Intellectual Property Controversy: The project has been marred by a dispute between Fernando Donis and Dubai Municipality. Donis alleged that his intellectual property was used without proper credit or compensation, a claim that led to a legal battle, although the case did not reach a conclusion.

In summary, the Dubai Frame is more than just an observation deck. It’s a powerful symbol of Dubai’s remarkable journey and a must-visit for anyone wanting to grasp the full scope of the city’s rapid development.
